How Much Should You Spend on an Engagement or Bespoke Ring?
Factors that will help determine your budget when choosing the perfect ring
Buying an engagement ring is a major life decision, but how much should you really spend? Let’s break down the truth behind this important decision.

First things first—there’s no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to setting a budget for an engagement ring. The old ‘three months salary’ rule is bit outdated. Today, it’s more about what works for your lifestyle, personal preferences, and most importantly knowing your partner. (Possibly change this to “You want to ensure it fits your partner’s lifestyle so they will wear it on a daily basis) You can get her a big rock because you want to show off that you can – truth is, if she’s not comfortable having a massive diamond on her finger, she will less likely be wearing her ring on a daily basis.
Now – one of the primary factor if not the only one is how much should you or would you spend on an engagement ring. I have heard so many time… « I don’t really have a budget in mind » In reality you do. And you must.
The question I am being asked 95% of the time is what the biggest size I can get for that amount. It’s the wrong question : budget is one thing but then you have to ask yourself – would you rather have a smaller diamond that is close to perfect or a bigger one with less clarity or lower color …
- Start by determining a budget that feels comfortable for you. Avoid debt, especially if there are other major life expenses ahead, like buying a home or planning a wedding. Bear in mind that you can always change the center stone for the occasion of an anniversary, when a baby is born, for a birthday or just for no reason at all.
- Back to business – The diamond’s cut, clarity, color, and carat weight influence the ring’s price. Prioritize what matters most to you—whether it’s sparkle or size—and adjust accordingly. A well-cut diamond will shine brighter, so if sparkle is what you’re after, prioritize cut over carat size. Clarity and color are also areas where you can balance your priorities depending on your budget. There are a lot of tricks to know for each diamond cut and shape – don’t be afraid to ask a pro!
- The ring’s setting is another major factor. Platinum is the most expensive option, known for its durability, but white or yellow gold can give you a similar look for less. You can opt for less expensive metals like palladium or silver if budget is a key concern.
- In today’s world, many couples are choosing more unique alternatives to diamonds. Colored gemstones like sapphires, emeralds, or even lab-grown diamonds offer a distinct look at a fraction of the price. These non-traditional choices not only help your budget but add personal flair. Then comes down the Style do you want it to be classic – modern – traditional – unique – edgy?
- It’s highly debatable but sometimes, a custom design can cost more than a ready-made ring, depending on the level of personalization and craftsmanship involved. However, you will most likely get a larger center stone whether it’s a diamond or a colored stone if you create a bespoke ring because you should get a better price for the diamond itself.
Whether you spend $1,000 or $20,000 or 350’000 – the most important thing is that the ring represents you and her.
