Learn More About Rolex's Most Complicated Watch

The Rolex Sky-Dweller is sophisticated and innovative in its functionalities, making it a distinct model and the first Rolex to feature both dual time zones and an annual calendar.

The Rolex Sky-Dweller is one of the most complicated watches in the current Rolex lineup, and it is objectively one of their most interesting as well. These watches feature a second time zone, date at 3 o'clock, and an annual calendar complication. An annual calendar accounts for the irregularity in months when changing the date. For example, the Sky-Dweller will jump right from April 30th to May 1st, unlike every other watch with a regular date complication that would instead flip to the 31st.

The overall appearance of the Sky-Dweller is reminiscent of the Datejust and Day-Date models thanks to the fluted bezel; however, the fluted bezel on the Sky-Dweller has an added function. The Rolex Sky-Dweller's Ring Command bezel rotates and is attached to gears that work in conjunction with the crown to accurately set all the watch's complications. There are a variety of Sky-Dweller dials and finishes, including the popular 18k Everose gold model with a chocolate dial, reference 326935. Other favorite references include the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller in 18-karat yellow gold, reference 326938, and of course, the Oystersteel Sky-Dweller with a blue dial, reference 326934.

How Does a Rolex Sky-Dweller Work?

What sets the Rolex Sky-Dweller apart from every other annual calendar watch is the way in which the complication is implemented. Apertures on the outside of each hour marker correspond to one of the twelve months, with the current month indicated by a red filling. Using the transition from April to May as an example, the watch's date would jump from "30" to "1" and the red filling would move from 4 to 5 o'clock. This is a beautiful piece of watchmaking to witness, and it is a brilliant way to add an annual calendar to the dial.

How to Set the Time on a Rolex Sky-Dweller?

To set the time on a Rolex Sky-Dweller, follow these steps:

  1. Set the reference time by unscrewing the crown and pulling it out to the first notch.
  2. Rotate the bezel counterclockwise to the 3rd position.
  3. Turn the crown in either direction until the dial displays the desired time.
  4. To set the local time, put the bezel in the 2nd position (rotating clockwise).
  5. Adjust the jumping hour hand by rotating the crown (the minute hand will not move).
  6. Set the date by putting the bezel in the 1st position (rotating clockwise).
  7. Rotate the crown until you've reached the desired month and date.
